About The AusIMM

The New Zealand Branch is one of 28 branches of the AusIMM and has approximately 220 members. A brief history of the Branch is available.  In addition to enjoying the benefits of the AusIMM, the New Zealand Branch has several local activities including:
  • Annual Branch conference typically attracts 250-300 delegates
  • Local technical and social meetings in some main centres
The Branch is active in promoting education mainly through three award schemes:
  • Scholarships awarded for research to students enrolled at Tertiary Education institutions, through the AusIMM New Zealand Education Endowment Trust
  • A cash prize for best student paper presented at the Annual Branch Conference
  • Prizes awarded to minerals related projects in the regional School Science Fairs

The Lloyd Jones Award
This award honours the contribution of Lloyd Jones, a founding member of The AusIMM New Zealand Branch, Secretary from formation of the Branch in 1966 until 1999, and Branch Chairman in 1971-1972 and 1980-1982. The award is presented in recognition of extraordinary and sustained service to The AusIMM New Zealand Branch. Service may be through filling positions on the New Zealand Branch Committee; through significant participation in the organisation of a number of New Zealand Branch conferences; or through significant service in New Zealand Branch activities. A maximum of one Award will be made in any one year and the award is not necessarily awarded annually. Nomination for the award must be made via a member of the New Zealand Branch committee and the Award will be decided by the Branch committee. The Award will be presented at the conference dinner of the Annual AusIMM New Zealand Branch Conference. The award will consist of a plaque and free registration at the Annual AusIMM New Zealand Branch Conference, and attendance at the conference dinner for the recipient and their partner, in the year of the Award.

Other activities include: sponsorship of publications on New Zealand mineral deposits, comment on public issues that affect members, the Tas McKee memorial address, close links with NZMIA  and representation on the Board of the Extractive Industries Training Organisation
