Sites on Mining and Exploration in New Zealand
This
brief summary lists Internet sites that contain useful information
and have links to other useful sites. The sites of those providing
services to the industry are not listed here, but can be reached
via links from them. While many useful sites are easily accessible
through the network of links from related sites, some are difficult
to find. The selection below is not intended to be exhaustive, but
list the sites that Internet users in the mining industry in New
Zealand may find useful.
New
Zealand mining, mineral resources and legislation
Crown
Minerals, Ministry of Economic Development
This site has recently been expanded and includes downloadable reports
on minerals and petroleum, permit application forms and information
on legislation and regulations. It also has a list of staff and
contacts within Crown Minerals, and background information and maps
on the mineral resources of New Zealand that can be downloaded free
of charge.
The resource information page has Crown Minerals publication lists
detailing minerals, energy and coal publications available either
on the website or can be purchased from Crown Minerals. An index
to coal and minerals open file reports in both dbf and Excel format
can be downloaded without charge, and is regularly updated.
NZ Minerals Industry Association
Site includes background on the Association, mining industry issues,
and has links to many of the sites listed here, as well as mining
companies and providers of services and suppliers to the mining
industry in New Zealand. Recent additions include downloadable codes
of practice for health and safety, teaching modules, and articles
and news on issues of interest to its members.
New Zealand Legislation
On-line access to an up-to-date database of New Zealand Acts (unconsolidated),
Regulations, Bills, Hansard and more, added to daily.
General

Puna web directory
The National Library's listing of New Zealand and Pacific Island
web sites is a re-development of Ara Nui formerly operated by Lincoln
University. It includes educational, government, research and professional
organisations, and companies of wide public interest. It has both
subject and name indices, and is updated every few days.
NZ Search engine
A fault-tolerant search engine confined to New Zealand.

Australasian
Institute of Mining and Metallurgy
The website includes weekly reviews of events that can be e-mailed
to members. Institute publications can be ordered on-line, and mineral
valuation (Valmin) and joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) codes
can be downloaded free of charge. An employment section provides
lists and details of employment opportunities in mining and members
can list their curriculum vitae.
AIG Directory of Australian
Geoscientists
Institution of Materials, Minerals and Mining
Lists publications, meetings and activities of the Institution with
links to numerous overseas mining and geological organisations.
Society for Mining, Metallurgy
and Exploration
Has
information on the Society, its activities and publications, and
details of its GEM (government, education, mining) public educational
programme, career planning and links to numerous other sites.
Society of Economic Geologists
Company

Public
companies
Lists New Zealand registered public companies and issuers of securities
and unit trusts, daily closing prices on the New Zealand and Australian
stock exchanges and has links to company, government and overseas
stock exchange sites.
Companies office
Summary information on companies and incorporated bodies (registered
office details and the names of two directors) is available free.
Further details can be obtained for a small fee.
NZ Stock Exchange
This site lists current prices for all companies listed on the NZ
stock exchange, information on the exchange, and its members.
Australian Stock Exchange
Has stock prices of all companies listed on the Australian Stock
Exchange, plus extensive information on finance, share trading,
and on-line purchasing of publications, employment opportunities
and company news.
Geology
Institute
of Geological and Nuclear Sciences
Includes the services provided by GNS, its databases, publications
(books, reports and maps) and contacts. The site contains information
on volcanology, seismology (including the latest earthquake), New
Zealand geology and nuclear sciences.
Geological Society of New Zealand
Information on GSNZ activities and publications. Useful links to
on-line journals, society submissions on issues such as the Resource
Management Act amendments, abstracts of recent PhD theses and links
to the home pages of geology and earth science departments of all
seven NZ universities. It also includes links to employment agencies
for earth scientists.
Royal Society of New Zealand
Called "Gateway to New Zealand Science" the home page has current
(daily) news with a scientific component and links to a wide range
of scientific bodies. It also includes a bookshop and a searchable
database of publications.

Mining
Journal
Has links to the sites for about 250 journals
on geology and related fields.
US Geological Survey
Includes information on a wide range of biological and geological
topics, recent events (eg the earthquake in Turkey) and an index
of publications, posters and educational material that can be purchased.
It also includes search facilities and an extensive section of links
to mainly US based sites related to earth science, biological science
and the environment.
Central
government
NZGO
is the Official Gateway to the New Zealand Government. It provides
an overview of New Zealand and its government, access to government
services, information and contact details for agencies.
Ministry of Economic Development
Has links to the Crown Minerals site and policy areas within the
Ministry of Economic Development.
New Zealand Trade Development
Board
Provides information on the New Zealand business environment, sector
profiles, statistics, contacts and useful publications for overseas
investors looking at New Zealand. Includes an online tour for overseas
investors.
Ministry for the Environment
Includes publication lists and reports that can be downloaded free
including recent reports, discussion documents, draft legislation
and the Ministry's newsletter.
Treasury
Gives free access to Treasury reports such as the budget and its
related reports and updated economic statistics.
Environment Court
Provides a schedule of court sitting dates and links to other sources
for recent decisions. It has information on judges and commissioners,
and links to the Waitangi Tribunal site, consent authorities, law
firms and environmental organisations. The Department of Courts
site has a page on the Environment Court with much less information.
Foundation of Research Science
and Technology
Has detailed information on the Government's research and development
programmes including news, the Foresight project, and a searchable
database of current projects.
Department of Conservation
Contains
general information about the department including contacts for
its offices throughout New Zealand, publications, policies and plans,
licences and permits. Mining issues are not specifically mentioned.
Regional
and local government
About
20 regional and district councils have websites but most are primarily
promotional, being confined mainly to general information about
their area and details on services provided by the council. Access
to District and Regional Council websites can be gained via the
"Local Government Online" website www.localgovt.co.nz
Land
Information
Land
lnformation NZ
The capabilities of the recently revised LINZ site are being extended
by the Landonline project that will allow all survey data to be
lodged and retrieved on-line, and conveyancing to be carried out
via the Internet. The site includes survey information and a searchable
geographic database of 40,000 New Zealand place names that it will
locate by latitude and longitude, NZ map grid references and nearby
place names.
Terralink
The Terralink site "terranet" allows searches of titles and other
documents for land throughout NZ via the Internet with accounts
available for corporate, private and casual users. In addition the
services now cover satellite imagery and land use databases, digital
topographic map production and GIS consulting services.
Maori Land
Developed from the Maori land Information Base Project it provides
information on Maori land via interactive maps and a searchable
database of individual blocks.
Educational
More
than 500 primary and secondary schools in New Zealand maintain websites
- up from 125 two years ago. These are listed in a searchable database
in the Schools
on line site.
University of Idaho
Mining educational website has links to 86 mining schools throughout
the world and includes six Australian Universities.
General
information - mining and minerals
Minerals
Council of Australia
Has fact sheets on 14 mineral commodities (Including coal) and 10
metals with information on the origin of deposits, production and
uses as well as information for use in primary schools. It has information
on issues affecting the Australian mining industry including native
title, environment, access to land plus a wide range of publications
for downloading. Links include a wide range of industry associations
and all of the State Government departments that a dminister mining.
British Columbia Ministry of
Energy and Mines
Numerous
ministries of mines and geological surveys have useful and informative
sites and this is an outstanding example with information for the
public, technical data, mining statistics and searchable databases
of mineral occurrences and mineral tenements.
BC and Yukon Chamber of
Mines
The Chamber of Mines site is another of the best sites with essays
on general topics related to exploration, mining and the environment,
and a good selection of links in a format that is easy to use.

mining and exploration companies
This site provides access to a large amount of information on companies,
commodities, financial data and employment opportunities in the
mining industry in Australia and PNG, mainly through links with
other sites.
Industrial Minerals
Metal prices for primary and
scrap
Minmet
Australia-based mining database with corporate, financial and property
information for about 10,000 resource and related companies. Members
pay $200 per year for detailed information.
lnfomine
Canada based worldwide mining database. Most of the information
is available free with some for subscribers only.
International Mining Investment
Intelligence
Excellent source of news and analysis on the mining industry in
general with focus on South Africa

properties of minerals
World Mining Directory
The
directory in the Chamber of Mines of South Africa site is very comprehensive,
listing connections to mining and related websites of companies,
government agencies, educational institutions and organisations
throughout the world.
